BMW 1 Series – A Small Car With a Big Heart

The BMW 1 Series is by far the smallest car with big ambitions. And with its caricature-type styling, I was initially wondering why in the world BMW would swing for the fences with this miniature dose of Bavarian Motor… But the truth of the matter is, this dose may look miniature but it is anything but.

Let us look at it from the exterior. At first glance, it is a shortened 3 Series with odd proportions. The lights seem large. The wheels seem large, the windows too. But I soon realized these observations were in comparison with the existing 3 Series. Maybe it is simply because we’ve grown accustomed to the 3 Series that the 1 Series seems odd. I begin to think; would I perceive the 3 Series as odd if the 1 Series had been in award-winning production for 30 years and it was the 3 Series that had been newly introduced? Would I then think that the 3 Series as an elongated, thinned-out mutilation of the 1? This was my exercise to adjust my objectivity lens. Clarity then hit me. By all means, this car is pretty. In its best attire, the 135i wears large shoes and sports an aggressive front spoiler which truly spikes its demeanour with a sort of steroid-filled short temper. This car really looks like it is on the edge of striking, ready for takeoff like a pissed-off pit-bull on a leash.

Do not mistake the 1 Series for a revived attempt of the 318 under a new badge. This is nothing of the like. And to make a bold and self-explaining statement; the 1 Series base engine (In North America) is the 328′s famed 6 cylinder which now houses 230 hp. And this little brute packs a 0-60 mph sprint of about 6.5 seconds. I know what you’re thinking at this point, how does the 135i perform? Well, the 135i is the top range (for now) of the 1 Series and employs the 6 Cylinder twin-turbo from the 335 model. Yes, you read that correctly and that translates to 300 ponies to the rear axle on 245/35/18′s. 0-60 mph in about 5.5 seconds, not bad for a tiny car yeah? True to form, the 1 Series is very BMW in the way it drives, handles and performs. With a stiff chassis, sport-tuned suspension and large diameter wheels, the task is achieved with the usual Bavarian refinement and pride. Some may argue that the ride is a tad rough, but the driving characteristics delivered by the 1 are a big reward to small price of comfort. With that said, the BMW 1 Series is very comfortable and its sports seats are well accommodating for driver and passenger.

The cockpit is unmistakably BMW with its usual German simplicity and quality finishing. No rattles, no loose parts and plenty of leather. Although I would have opted for more luxury on the inside considering the price of the 1 Series is not far off that of the 3 Series, but overall this is a great car and provides endless hours of fun.

If you’re looking for a car that takes corners like a go-kart and has endless oomph of torque, this is it. It’s small, practical for city driving and really exciting. On the negative: it’s rather expensive considering a few more quids could get you the 3 Series and its winter capabilities are questionable. You can also opt for the soft-top convertible and soon to come, a diesel model.

Achieving The Best Fuel Economy Is Finally Cheap, Easiest And Accurately Than Ever

In engineers’ terms, fuel efficiency means the thermal capacity of converting the energy contained in the fuel to kinetic energy, or work, needed to move your car. For a vehicle, fuel efficiency means the output one gets for a unit amount of fuel input, such as “miles per gallon” or “litters per 100 kilometers”. For you, fuel efficiency simply means less fuel wasted and more money in your pocket. The automotive industry believed that by maintaining the air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1 by electronic means, like electronic fuel injection and electronic ignition systems, they had already achieved the best combustion process that assures the best fuel economy.

Unfortunately this is not always true because is not sufficiently known, but there are a lot of very ordinary daily driving situations that makes than the engine operate steady at low speeds, creating less temperature in the combustion chamber. It makes that the stock spark plugs results operating too cold, which affects the combustion process, because the low temperature do not allows burning completely the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.

Unburned fuel is wasted fuel and you paid for it. Wasted fuel is wasted money.

These very common driving or traffic conditions are:

Choose a User Friendly Auto Navigation System

With so many options on the market when it comes to auto navigation systems how do you choose the one that will best suit your needs? This question may seem very simplistic; unfortunately the answer is not nearly as simple as the question. There are many things to consider when selecting a personal navigation system not the least of which is what purpose you will be using the system to achieve.

Many people consider auto navigation systems for their automobiles and no other purpose. The truth is that these devices can have many very practical uses in your every day life. If you are a person who spends a lot of time outdoors, you might find that a handheld GPS device with mapping capabilities is better suited to your personality and your needs than a stand-alone type of auto navigation system. The reason being that these devices can not only be used for turn-by-turn driving directions but also for off road travels, geocaching, boating, hiking, biking, and mountain climbing among many other popular activities. Handheld devices are perfect because they can be easily removed from your vehicle and taken along with you. The portability makes them perfect companions for just about any activity in which you choose to participate.

Many newer models of cars, trucks, and SUVs are coming equipped with in dash auto navigation systems. Don’t for a second think you aren’t paying for these glorious goodies. In fact, the chances are that you are paying quite the premium price for these lovely features and aren’t even aware. The worst thing though is that if you are financing the cost of your car you are also financing the cost of your navigation system. If at all possible avoid getting into this situation unless you are particular enamored of the look of the in dash systems as they really offer no better coverage than you can find in many stand alone systems that you can easily install and cost significantly less. The thing to remember about these systems is that they are only good as long as you are in your car for the most part. You may find some that can last so many hours away from a power source (if you have a system that you’ve installed yourself rather than a factory installed system) but most of them aren’t going to offer the greatest features for activities such as geocaching or fishing.

Before you buy, seriously consider and have in mind the activities for which you will use your device. Don’t buy a device that charges for features that you aren’t likely to use and avoid at all cost an interface that isn’t easy to use. Remember you will be using this while on the road most of the time and you want a system that won’t require a concentrated effort in order to operate. We have quite enough distractions to deal with while on the road without adding a difficult to operate auto navigation system.

Auto navigation systems are great to have when you need them and even at times when they simply come in handy though you could have survived without them. For me the security of knowing that I will never be truly lost again is well worth the investment I have made in mine, I honestly believe you will feel the same way about your system once you decide which one is best for you.

General Information On Diesel Engines

Diesel engines offer the lowest specific fuel usage
of any other large internal combustion engine. The
fact remains, two-stroke diesels with high pressure
forced induction, particularly turbo charging, make
up a large percentage of the largest diesel engines.

Throughout North America, diesel engines are generally
used in larger trucks, where the low stress, high
efficiency cycle will lead to a much longer engine
life and lower costs to operate. These advantages
also help to make the diesel engine ideal for use in
the heavy haul industry.

Cars however, continue to use gasoline, primarily
due to the consumer desire for a wider range of
RPM. In Europe, the use of diesel engines with cars
is far more common.

Even though diesel engines are more efficient when
throttled down, they aren’t suitable for most types
of aircraft. The higher compression ratios of the
diesel cycle demand a much stronger block, head,
and almost all moving parts in general. These
stronger parts add a lot of weight, or a lot of
expense, especially if lighter alloys are being used.

The Otto cycle engines are much cheaper to build for
these reasons, although they have long been overtaken
by the turbine engines. For the same displacement
of the engine, Otto cycles will produce more actual
power than a Diesel cycle can, because the fuel
will burn at a much faster rate, allowing more power
strokes per minute than a standard diesel can offer.

What this means, is that less fuel has to be carried.
Additionally, commercial aircraft is normally run
at preset limits, so that Otto cycle engines used
in aircraft don’t suffer anywhere near the efficiency
penalties that land vehicles do. Heavy equipment,
such as those used in mining and construction,
almost always uses diesel engines.

Diesel engines are also used with submarines. In
these types of submarines, the diesel engine is run
when the submarine is on the surface, which charges
the batteries that power the submarine once it is
submerged.

All across the world, diesel engines serve many
different purposes. They are used with almost all
types of heavy machinery, and other vehicles. Gas
isn’t the way to go with heavy machinery, as the
engines simply can’t withstand the beating.

Diesel has been popular for many years with machinery
and submarines, simply because the engines can
last for years and years. Although they won’t offer
as much speed as gasoline, the torque and power is
still there.

Exotic Car Lovers Dream – Porsche or Ferrari

The fast and luxurious cars from Porsche and Ferrari originated in Europe; Germany and Italy respectively. Both exotic sports cars are more than 50 years old with cutting edge engineering and exquisite styling. These two cars have always been compared for many reasons since they are race cars, cars of status for the rich. Most people always correlate these cars with style and performance.

A modern exotic sports car should have the following traits: it should be easy to start, low to the ground, maneuver well around the city with fat tires, able to put your pedal to the metal on a couple of open and safe roads.

The Ferrari 430 and Porsche 911 Carrera S are two sports cars that are begging to be compared in road tests. What are the results ? Well the Ferrari 430 will zoom from 0 to 100km in 4 seconds while the Porsche does it in 4.8 seconds. Hardly something you can consider slow, but when comparing it to the 430 it is noticeably slower. For fast acceleration like this, both sports cars will need sport brakes, both offer ceramic disc brakes.

Both cars provide impressive power utilizing 6-speed gearboxes and offer top of the line performance handling. These exotic cars offer excellent and comfortable interior space and even when the space seems limited, the passengers won’t feel cramped.

Let’s talk about the exterior. The Carrera S4 has a finish that is at a premium level, in and of itself, and surpasses the Ferrari 430 which is still impressive with carbon fiber, aluminum and a combination of suede in the interior. Although, the Germans excel on the finish, the 911 Carrera S looks like a 911 and doesn’t bring as many ooohs and ahhhs as a Ferrari does when it comes to appearance. Ferrari’s just generate more attention possibly due to their rarity on the road and higher price. Nevertheless, most people, if given the opportunity, will not pass up the Ferrari F430 if they had the cash. In the end, they just may do that because of the Porsche 911 Carrera S having a more complete package but you can always test drive your favorite exotic sports car and make your own decision.

Auto – Car Buying Tips

You are probably worried about being taken advantage of you
because you didn’t ask the right questions or because you
just didn’t know what to look for. Maybe you’ve been taken
advantage of in the past by new car dealers and have a
natural distrust for people that sell cars. There are a few
things that you can do to avoid being taken advantage of
when you are buying a car. Just because you are not an
expert on cars doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to make a
great decision and get the ideal car of your dreams.

The four basic things that you should make sure that you do
to make sure you get a good deal, are research the car you
are planning to buy and know the car you want before you
shop, shop for a new car during an ideal time, and plan
before you buy your car. You can rest assured that if you do
these simple things, you will be happy with your new car
purchase. There may be a few issues that come up down the
line, but overall you will feel as if you have done your
best if you follow these steps. Buying a new car is a very
large purchase. First make sure that you can afford the car
you want and then head out shopping.

Ideally your car payment should be between 10% and 12% of
your total monthly income. If you can make it even less than
that, then you should do so. If you can’t find a car payment
that is less than 12% of your total monthly income, then
determine what 12% of your monthly income is, put that aside
every month for 6-12 months. You should be able to afford a
used car within that time. Another plus about buying a used
car is that you won’t have those excessive monthly payments.
You can just pay for the car outright after you’ve saved up.

Next, there are some ideal times where you can go shopping
for a new car. These ideal times are the times when car
salesman and dealers are under a lot of pressure. When
quotas are not met and deadlines are tight, car dealers will
be willing to put aside greed in favor of just making the
sale. Dealers will be much less likely to take advantage of
you during these times. You want to use times like this to
your advantage. Planning before you buy your car is another
important step. You should do research online about the car
that you are most interested in buying. Read through at
least one car magazine that you can buy from the grocery
store. Read some of the articles so that you can immerse
yourself somewhat in the world of automobiles and the
features you should be looking for. You should also plan to
visit a few car dealers even if you already know who you’re
going to buy from. You will naturally make your dealer feel
insecure when he knows you’ve been shopping around.

Eccentric Cars Off The Roads

Want the oddballs in the automotive world? Well, brace yourself for the most eccentric cars off the roads. They are exotic. They are intriguing. But they are not for everybody to have and hold.

In today’s auto shows, manufacturers are shelling out a fortune to be part of the specialty market players that introduce the most eccentric cars. The recognition, regardless of the fact that the cars will not be allowed on the roads, is enough to make the automakers elated.

One of the exotic cars ever launched is the Artega, which was penned by Henrik Fisker, famed for being an extraordinary designer. The car is a fresh contribution from a new German automaker that plans to enter in the manufacture of high-performance sports cars for daily use. The 2008 Artega features a 3.6-liter Volkswagen-sourced V6 mated to the DSG twin-clutch gearbox of the company to produce maximum output of 300 horsepower via the rear wheels.

Another odd car is dubbed Carver One, which is said to be the “the world’s first commercially available self-balancing, tilting, three-wheeled vehicle.” Carver One is part motorcycle, part car; it is all about thrills over practicality. The contraption features a removable roof panel, 660-cubic-centimeter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 68 horsepower and 74 pound-feet of torque.

Gumpert Apollo Sport is another eccentric car to behold. Apollo Sport is given the high-performing mid-engine supercar powered by a 4.2-liter Audi V8 engine. It also features a fixed rear wing, rugged body, and gullwing doors that flip up on their roof-mounted hinges. It resembles the looks of a race car straight out of the FIA GT European supercar series.

Make way for the Rinspeed eXasis, a drivable “glass” car that features an aluminum frame with a clear plastic body and floor. The car is powered by a 150-hp two-cylinder engine, which sits on the transmission. To note, the car’s power-to-weight ratio puts it in line with the likes of a Porsche.

The Spanish automaker A. D. Tramontana has set forth a carbon-fiber road missile as a melding of Formula One cars and fighter planes. The company said the Tramontana was “modeled on the streamlined curves of the Costa Brava’s winds.” The car is given a twin-turbo V12 engine that generates 720 horsepower, about as powerful as a race car. The full production version of the car will go on sale this summer in Europe.

Peraves Monotracer, another strange looking car that boasts futuristic monocoque body is composed of glass, Kevlar and carbon-weave bonded together and reinforced with aluminum roll bars. The car is powered by an inline four-cylinder engine that produces 130 horsepower. The car is driven by using handlebars comparable to a motorcycle.

These cars are pretty exotic and complex. As a fact, a Volvo repair manual would appear simple if theirs are placed beside it. Automotive fanatics love these cars nonetheless.

Glady Reign is a 32 year old is a consultant for an automotive firm based in Detroit, Mi. she is a native of the motor city and grew up around cars hence her expertise in the automotive field.

2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid Road Test – A Misconception That US Automakers Are Behind

There’s a common misconception that U.S. automakers are behind some imports in technology and fuel efficiency. That may have been true some years ago, but it could not be further from the truth today. Both Ford and GM have become quality and fuel economy leaders in the last few years, especially from the highly competitive mid-size segment up. Chrysler still trails in both but is working hard and fast to catch up. Don’t believe us? Check the numbers.

The EPA estimates for the ultra-fine new Fusion and Milan Hybrids are an impressive 41 mpg city and 36 highway, which beats Toyota’s ’09 mid-size Camry Hybrid by eight and two mpg, respectively. They are, Ford says, the most fuel-efficient midsized sedans in America.

The conventional Fusion and Milan, nicely restyled and much improved for 2010, offer the mid-size segment’s best gasoline four-cylinder fuel economy, more powerful available V-6s, class-exclusive technologies, including blind spot detection and warning with cross traffic alert and Ford SYNC, and more total passenger and luggage capacity than the Camry. The Fusion’s new look is more upscale, sportier and aerodynamically slicker. But the most exciting news is this all-new Fusion Hybrid. Together with its Mercury Milan Hybrid counterpart, it joins the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner (compact SUV) Hybrids to double both the size and volume of Ford Motor Co.’s hybrid lineup.

Among this next-generation system’s key features are an ultra-efficient new 2.5-liter four-cylinder “Atkinson cycle” engine good for 155 hp and 136 lb.-ft. of torque mated to an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission, or “e-CVT.” Intake Variable Cam Timing (iVCT), enable seamless transitions from gas to electric and vice-versa, while both spark and cam timing are varied according to engine load to optimize efficiency and emissions. Enhanced electronic throttle control reduces airflow on shutdowns, which reduces fuel need on restarts, and a “wide-band lambda sensor” analyzes air-fuel ratios and adjusts the lean/rich mixture to keep the system in balance and minimize emissions.

The new 275-volt nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery is smaller, lighter and optimized to produce 20 percent more power. Cooled by cabin air, its improved chemistry allows it to run at higher temperatures, and an added variable voltage converter boosts voltage to the battery to operate the motor and generator more efficiently. A “smarter” climate control system with an electric air-conditioning compressor minimizes engine usage by running it only as needed for heating and cooling.

The brake system delivers full regenerative braking (when the drive motor becomes a generator), backed up by friction braking as needed, to capture nearly 94 percent of the energy normally lost through friction in braking and send it back to the battery. And, as we noticed during our drive, it delivers improved brake pedal feel compared to the previous system.

The hybrid system also allows the Fusion and Milan Hybrids to operate longer at higher speeds in electric mode than competitive systems. They can run up to 47 mph in pure electric mode, approximately double the speed of some competitors. “Because our hybrid can run at a much higher speed in electric mode, you can do so much more in city-driving situations,” says Ford Hybrid Applications Manager Gil Portalatin. “Under the right conditions, you can drive in your neighborhood or in mall parking lots without using a drop of gasoline.” With the 41 city and 36 hwy ratings, Fusion and Milan Hybrids can achieve a driving range of over 700 miles on a single tank of gas.

It uses two high-resolution, full-color liquid crystal display (LCD) screens flanking the speedometer that can be configured to show different levels of information. The approach is multi-layered: A tutorial mode helps drivers learn about its instruments and the system, while tech enthusiasts will enjoy detailed gauges that help them become more efficient. The system even “grows” vines and leaves on-screen to reward efficient driving.

Drivers can choose one of four data screens: The basic “Inform” screen displays fuel level and battery charge status; “Enlighten” adds an electric vehicle mode indicator and a tachometer; “Engage” adds engine output power and battery output power; and “Empower” adds power to wheels, EV power threshold and accessory power consumption. All levels can show instant fuel economy, fuel economy history, odometer, engine coolant temperature, transmission gear and trip data-fuel economy, time-elapsed fuel economy and miles to empty. There’s even an engine coolant temperature indicator that turns green when the engine is warm enough to allow engine shut-off and restart for full EV operation.

Tuning Your Car For Maximum Performance

Tune up your car for maximum performance. There are numerous products available in the market which can be used for tuning of your car. After market products are cheap and used in different set of cars. After market products is used in specific cars which have high engine capacity. Use of these products in a low engine power can destroy the engine completely while operation.

Tuning of car can be done for two reasons. One is to increase the speed and the other is its reliability or durability. Use of some performance products can increase the engine life of your car. They are no used for high speeds but also for a smooth functioning of the machine. Internet is the preferred place where you can order these products at an affordable cost. By purchasing online you can save lot of money and time. Free home delivery will be dispatched on every purchase.

Use of air filters can be effective if you need some additional power. An air filter regulates air inside the engine which is required for functioning. There are two ways where you need to select one while installing such devices. You need to take extreme care if it is a cheap product or pay costly and install the best one with maintenance free products. Air intake system is one more device which can set the wheels on fire. It directly increases the air flow of the car when the accelerator pedal is pressed. Gas combustion takes place on a larger scale which results in rapid acceleration. Crankshaft goes spinning in a different manner which is more than the stock settings.

Use of turbo charger can be done if you need more speed. This will eventually decrease the mileage but give a very good top end. You can feel the thrust when the car accelerates to 6000 RPM. Hearing a V8 roar at high speeds is fun. The power generated by a turbo charger is superb. There are variations like for new cars use of super chargers are required and for old cars use of turbo chargers is required. There is not much difference in both the units as the turbine make is different.

Accessories like these can be installed in your car which can give you outstanding results. Change in the exhaust will give you added power to zoom up the roads. Carbon fiber exhaust systems are introduced which are light weighted and increase the horse power.
