Notes and quotes from the Carfax 400 at MIS
WHAT HAPPENED: Series points leader Kevin Harvick clinched a spot in the Chase and ended a 20-year drought for Richard Childress Racing at MIS. Dale Earnhardt had the last victory for RCR at MIS in 1990. It was Harvick’s third victory of the season. It was also a good day for owner Jack Roush of Northville. Roush didn’t get a win in his backyard, but had three drivers in the top five.

How To Protect Your Self From Buying A Lemon When It Comes To Used Cars – Part Two?

This is the part two of the article how to protect your self from buying a lemon when it comes to used cars, to continue our discussion on accident repairs when it comes to a used car. Other tips on how to spot an accident repaired vehicles aside from the body VIN etching stickers can be paint color. When a vehicle is repainted for whatever reason, it is difficult to match the paint color, this is due to the fact older paint has been exposed to the elements for many years. The sun light, UV rays, and rain has taken its toll and most likely faded the paint to a much lighter shade, when new paint is applied it is virtually impossible to match the older paint color. This is especially true when it comes to colors such as silver, beige, or any light metallic paint. A good paint to match would be black or anything very dark. But never the less if you see the doors on the vehicle doesn’t match in color 100% chances are one of the doors has been painted in the past. When it comes to body work on a vehicle, one should not automatically assume the worst, many times a car is repainted due to scratches, dent, scraps, and it can be something very minor. Alarm bells should go off if the part has been replaced all together, it can be something major.

Body shop repair bills are usually very high, from a simple bumper replacement with new paint, that can cost easily $700 and more in Canada, add additional fees of rental cars, and detailing. The total bill of that repair can run as much as $1000. The amount indicated on the CarProof report can be deceptive to untrained eye, usually you shouldn’t be concerned if the repair bill is less than $3000, it can be as simple as the front and rear bumper replacement. If the vehicle has frame damage it is usually obvious when driving the car, especially at high rate of speed. If the produces unusual noises, or you have a hard time keeping the steering wheel straight, chances are the frame has been damaged and it is no longer straight producing an uncontrollable driving behavior. In low speed, if the vehicle pulls hard to one side it also can be a good indication of body frame damage. But the best way to tell a car has major damage is to bring the vehicle to your local mechanic for a thorough inspection.

Sometimes the CarProof report can show no accident reports, this can be the result of previous owner paying for the repair in cash, and didn’t make any claim against his insurance policy. This is a good indication the repair cost was relatively low, and the owner could afford to pay for it in full. It is not necessary a bad sign. A Guide To Water Removal From Automobiles

When a car is submerged, every nook and corner is exposed to water. This would definitely require proper water removal procedures to ensure that water is not left in the car. The car will need many steps to remove all the water that has permeated its systems. There is the interior for example. The obvious areas are the carpet and upholstery. These should be removed from the car as soon as possible. These need to be dried in a minimal amount of time to prevent molds and fungus. They should be treated with an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent. They should not be reinstalled until all moisture and treatments have dried or been removed.

Let’s break down this process, the upholstery will require vacuuming out all the water from them as soon as possible. Then it needs to be placed into a dehumidifier, with air or low heat driers. The same process should be repeated with the carpet and padding. If possible, the carpet and padding should be removed and replaced. They tend to mold, releasing biological agents into the air of your car which could put your family’s and friends’ health at risk.

You will now understand why a professional is required or why an insurance company often considers a car, that has been submerged, a total loss. Here we will talk about the mechanical aspects of water removal. All the oils and lubricants must be removed, the areas cleaned of all water residue. These areas are the engine oil, the brake fluid, the lubricant from the rear end, the wheel bearings, the automatic transmission; all filters must be removed and replaced. The catalytic converter require a steady pressure to operate properly, thus this is usually removed and replaced. Also the gas tank has been flooded with water. This requires the removal of the tank, flushing it with a water removal agent, putting it back onto the car and refilling it with gas.

Now, the next area of concern is the wiring and computer system. Water removal here is obviously necessary. All are typically removed and replaced or they may continue to have problems in the future. Some of these problems might be ignition coil, fuel injectors, the wiring harness, where your electrical system is centralized. Even small things like control modules might require replacement.

The computer is designed to search out your car’s system to identify a problem. What if this system also is submerged? Will it read your system as it was designed to do? Do you want to take that chance? Well, let’s relate it to the computer you use from your desk every day. If your computer was submerged into water, you would never think of trying to dry it out and depend on it to perform the tasks your require of it daily. Well, would you?

The computer in your car regulates many systems from the operation of the car to the creature comforts. The new DVD players, the mapping systems that directs you to where you wish to travel, the air bags that saves your lives when you are in a serious accident.

This is just a brief summary of water removal from your car that might be required to restore your water damaged car. This article has only scratched the surface of automobile water removal, but hopefully it has giving you enough information to make you double check your professionals’ repairs or lack thereof.

Removing Unwanted Paint From a Car

Buying a new car can be draining yet rewarding all in one. Once the new car is off the lot and in the driveway it is like bringing home a new toy. The beautiful glisten of the brand new paint, the new car smell of the interior and the smooth acceleration of the brand new engine can make any new car owner fall head over heels for their new car. You’ve been taking care of that car since day one; not getting a scratch on it and washing it once a week. But you can’t avoid everything. Driving to work one day you see paint splattered on the roadway but you can’t move into the oncoming lane of a two lane road because you are approaching a blind bend. The paint is unavoidable. You drive the car right through the paint and it still has its strong scent. That can only mean one thing. The paint is fresh and it is now all over your brand new car.

How do you remove unwanted paint from a car? This method works but it takes a lot of time and a lot of elbow grease. The first step in removing the unwanted paint is to get the car out of the direct rays of the sun. If the paint is only on one side of the car; turn that side of the car away from the sun. Make sure you wash the car before doing anything else. There are plenty of different items that can be used for removing unwanted paint from a car. Some of them are paint thinner, goo gone and anything with acetone in it such as nail polish. Paint thinner can work but you have to be very, very careful. The paint thinner can ultimately remove the original paint from your car.

After applying these substances to the vehicle make sure you rewash the car and then put a coat of wax on the area that was covered in the unwanted paint. When removing the unwanted paint from the vehicle make sure you don’t use your fingernail to scratch off the paint but use a soft rag dipped in soapy water. Spray the paint remover onto the areas of the car you are working on at the time and rub gently but with some elbow grease. Also, don’t work on the same area for an extended period of time or the original paint job will begin to wear off. Move from area to area, slowly removing the unwanted paint.

Since you drove through the wet paint on the roadway, it is splattered on the tires and on the plastic covers above the wheel attached to the body of the car. Those plastic covers can be removed to clean them. Also, take off each wheel and clean it with soap and water. That should be enough to get the paint off of the wheel. If not, you can use paint thinner since there is no other paint on the wheel.

The process works but it takes a good handful of hours to get the paint completely off of the car without ruining the original paint job.
