World Traffic Safety Symposium Awards Volvo for Child Booster Cushion System

Volvo Cars’ new booster cushion system is the automaker’s gateway to get the World Traffic Safety Symposium awards. The new system from the automaker is engineered to help protect children who have outgrown their toddler seats.

At the 2007 World Traffic Safety Symposium, a panel of judges from the Dept. of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Automobile Association of America Foundation for Traffic Safety, the National Road Safety Foundation, and the New York Police Department Traffic Safety Division awarded Volvo the first prize in the Automotive Manufacturer category for this innovative safety feature. The award stands among three other safety acknowledgements: Public Service, Media Activity and Aftermarket Product Design.

The Swedish automaker has contributed several safety milestones in the industry including the Volvo brake caliper, seat belts, and airbags among many others. The latest, so far, is the booster cushion system which is a combination of the tougher side body structure, load limiting seat belts, inflatable curtain and other reliable parts to deliver a distinctive engineering solution that ensures safety and comfy travel experience. Volvo’s innovation is the world’s first two-step integrated booster cushion. This is why it deserves to receive a prestigious international commendation.

“Our goal is to help protect occupants. This award acknowledges our efforts to help protect our smallest passengers, our children,” noted Thomas Broberg, the Senior Safety Advisor for the Volvo Car Corporation in Sweden. “This new seat, in conjunction with our refinements in side body structure and the inflatable curtain will have a significant reduction in child injuries.”

The seat belt positioning is one of the essential considerations when ensuring safety of children of different heights. Several studies have shown that proper positioning with the use of a booster cushion helps lessen abdominal injuries caused by the child slipping under the seat belt. Field data in several studies supports these findings and stresses the significance of booster seats. Studies point out that the booster be designed to hold the belt snugly across the pelvis or thighs during a frontal impact.

The overall effectiveness of booster seats is estimated as 31 percent as compared to utilizing only a seat belt and as high as 75 percent as compared to no restraint at all. Getting all children of appropriate age and size to use booster cushion delivers a potentially noteworthy safety benefit.

According to a study carried out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 39.5 percent of the 664 children inspected in belt-positioning booster cushion were considered as critical misuse. The most common misuse was improper fitment of the shoulder belt followed by loose belt, improper fit of the lap belt and inappropriate age/fit.

“We took into account the child’s physical size and weight, seat belt misuse, child physiology, along with redesigning our vehicle side body structure and side impact inflatable curtain to come up with this new integrated two-step booster seat,” said Broberg. “There will be better fitment of our three-point seat belt, a wider age and weight range, and better attitude for the child who can now easily see outside with the added benefit of reducing driver distraction. Hopefully we will hear less often: ‘Are we there yet?’”

Ensure Road Safety with a Properly Functioning Brake System

A properly functioning braking system can make the difference between life and death. A problem that seems very small such as a brake line that is rusty or a brake hose that has cracked can make it unsafe for one to drive a car as the brakes can fail without warning. It is therefore important for one to check the performance of the brakes regularly, especially if the car has been dormant for a while. There are many warning signs that can indicate a problem with the brake system. These include low levels of brake fluid, a very spongy or very hard brake pedal, dragging brakes, the pedal pulsates or goes very far down and brakes smell as though they are burning or make any noise such as squeaking, grinding and screeching. If the warning lights of the brake come on when driving, this should also be considered a warning.

Spongy or low brakes can be as a result of leaking brake fluid. To check for a leak in the brake fluid, one should locate the master cylinder of the brake; usually situated in the firewall vicinity behind the engine compartment. On locating it, one can then open it and check inside to determine the fluid level. The nuts connecting the brake booster and the master cylinder are loosened and the seal enclosing the push rod observed. Any brake fluid leak will obviously be noted. The caliper piston should also be checked for leaks and the brake hoses examined for cracks. A wet caliper may be a sign of a leak of the brake fluid. The master cylinder cap should be tight and one should check for any signs of leakage. One can also check for leakage of brake fluid by driving the car onto a sheet, a large cardboard piece or a blanket and tap the brakes hard, then repeat the process for a number of times. If brake fluid can be observed on the surface, then there is leakage.

Braking problems usually arise out of neglect and it is important to conduct a regular check up. The highest braking system performance is usually ensured by an optimal pad depth. Once a problem is noted, then it is time to for the braking pads to be changed. It is important for one to own a tool kit for the task. Most of the time, it is the front pads which are changed. Wearing of the brake pads can be observed by looking at them from outside the front tire. If the depth of the pad less than a quarter of an inch it should be replaced soon. If it is less than an eighth then the rotor is in danger of being damaged and the brake pad should be changed as soon as possible. Noises are also an indication of that the brake pads need to be changed. This is a fairly straightforward process. First of all, loosen the wheel lug nuts, and then jack the car off the ground. The lug nuts are then removed together with the wheel. The bolts are then removed while care is taken not to move the caliper. The pads are inside the caliper and if they seem worn out then change them. Note that It is important to always take your car to the mechanic for a regular check up.

Bmw Motorrad’s Neck Brace System to Boost Road Safety

The German automaker BMW has worked with African Physician Chris Leatt to produce a device to reduce the risk of neck and spinal cord injuries for motorcycle riders.

The Neck Brace System of the German automaker is made from a mix of Kevlar, carbon fibre and fibre-glass which is a good combination that could deliver supreme strength. The system also is comfortable to wear. This is because a soft, gentle and impact-absorbing foam layer that is placed between the hardened outer casing and the rider. To easily slip the Neck Brace System around the neck, like a collar, two rapid action fasteners are fixed at its side. These fasteners allow for simple handling and easy adjustment.

The Neck Brace System was developed by BMW Motorrad in partnership with South African physician Leatt and his team of accident researchers, bio-mechanics and surgeons. It provides protection by offering a restraining effect if the rider’s head moves greatly forwards, backwards, or to the sides. The rider is also given able to retain freedom of movement needed for riding, with any risk of over-stretching of the neck, in any given direction, significantly reduced. Injuries arising from forces coming down from the helmet to the spine are absorbed by the corrugated edging that surrounds the BMW Motorrad’s system. In essence, the innovative system is engineered to provide optimum protection for the spine during an accident.

Conrad Parker, the National Aftersales Manager of BMW Motorrad, said: “The BMW Neck Brace System is a revolutionary move in terms of motorcycling safety, and is the biggest step forward for rider safety equipment since the introduction of body-armour, the back protector and full-face helmets.” He added, “The launch of this system reinforces BMW Motorrad’s goal to make motorcycling as safe as possible by incorporating new technology in the Rider Equipment range. I am in no doubt that riders the world over will put safety first and welcome the benefits this protective equipment offers.”

BMW, an independent German company and manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles, is the parent company of Rolls-Royce and MINI car brands. The company also was the owner of Rover. It stands by the slogan “The Ultimate Driving Machine.”

The German automaker has always had a tight and loyal community following. This is because of its etched philosophy for quality. Auto parts like the BMW antenna, radiators, engines, and other auto equipment are carefully designed and assembled to ensure durability and performance. The automaker is one of the few that support product lines to their limits thus providing ‘spirited driving’ in certain operation manuals.

In the summer of 2001, the company even went further by starting the BMW Films website and offering some sporty models being driven to extremes. These videos became very famous within the enthusiast community and have illuminated a lot of auto owners searching for a sporty or fun car. However, despite the overwhelming success, BMW Films were taken offline on October 21, 2005.

At present, the German automaker is concentrating on producing product lines that are sure to catch the attention of the aficionados. The company is also absorbed in formulating new innovations to further enhance road safety and limit injuries relating to road accidents.

Consumer reports on audio system of cars can be very testing. The consumer reports vary from car to car

Consumer Reports’ has recently announced their choice of the best carmakers that build the best cars and leading the pack is Volkswagen is Europe’s largest automaker and manufacturer of quality VW alternator is together with its luxury unit Audi. They are followed by Honda, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, and Nissan. In the aspect of reliability the carmakers that scored high include Honda, Subaru, and Toyota. This was the result of the Consumer Reports’ latest Annual Car Reliability Survey. Consumer Reports has also provided some explanations why some automakers are succeeding while others are wishing for luck.  Consumer reports studied its own internal data to determine the various factors that affects the success rate of the 17 major carmakers.  Consumer reports has also analyzed the efficiency of vehicles running on batteries but conducting more than 50 toad tests coupled with reliability histories. It is based on more than one million vehicles testing.

Consumer Reports will recommend you only the vehicles which have passed all the possible tests conducted by them. To obtain an average predicted reliability basing again on the CR’s annual reliability survey. CR also requires for vehicles to undergo crash test or at least be included in a government rollover test. The report cars will also contain lists of the common high and lows of the vehicles tested. The main rationale of the CR tests is to show customers that no carmaker is perfect and that there would always be flaws on their vehicles. And these imperfections are what exactly Consumer Reports wants customers to be aware of before they decide on purchasing a vehicle. As they say, prevention is always better than cure. By knowing beforehand the defects of certain vehicles will help customers to make right decisions on which car brand to buy. Consumer Reports’ has use Volkswagen as an example stating that the automaker scores high on the various tests conducted by CR obtaining an average test score of 81 but despite that out of the number of VW vehicles tested only 45 percent is recommended for use by Consumer Reports’. Toyota on the other hand obtains a less than satisfactory average test, scoring only 70 percent but due to the automaker’s consistently high reliability, Consumer Reports recommends 85 percent of its tested vehicles. Consumer Reports also added that if the only consideration for purchasing a vehicle is performance, safety, and comfort then Volkswagen is the perfect choice. Volkswagen together with its Audi models do well in terms of handling, braking, and standard safety features.  This seems to be a very unfortunate report.

Consumer services are very helpful for consumers. http://www.consumer-reports.in/

Reasons To Have A High Quality Car Stereo System

So you’ve spent thousands getting your car ready for show. New paint job, tricked out suspension, phat rims, you’ve got it all. But what about on the inside? A bumpin’ system can be THE difference between a cool car and a truly awesome show winner.

While a killer system can make your car that much cooler, having a crap car stereo system can totally kill your cars coolness factor. This is never good if you’ve already spent a lot of money tricking out your vehicle. Even if you have something less than fantastically good looking, having that killer thump is guaranteed to make more people actually want to ride in your car. By the same token, a pathetic car stereo system can make your car have even less appeal than it does now.

So What Makes a Killer Car Stereo System?

Quality and attention to detail pretty much sums it up. You will never be able to get the best sound out of cheap parts, and they are more prone to failing (usually at the worst possible moment) than the more expensive parts. Little things, like the frequency of a crossover, your EQ settings, and small variations in speaker placement can make a huge difference in the overall sound of your car stereo system.

Listen around and see who has systems that sound good to you. If you can listen to several different systems in the same kind of car as yours, you will be able to get a much better idea of what sounds good and what doesn’t. But even if you are listening to different car stereo systems in different vehicles than yours, you can still get a good idea of what brands of gear you like and which ones to avoid cause they sound like crap. Remember, whatever sounds the best to you in your car is the best for you! No one else can tell you what is sounds good, because listening is a very subjective experience.

Car stereo expos and conventions can be another good way of gaining listening experience, and you will usually be able to check out more different systems at one than you can find on the streets.

Whatever you do, unless you have a truly awesome factory car stereo system, you will want to replace that head unit and speakers. The difference, even using factory mounting locations, can be the difference between night and day. Your mids will have more punch, your highs will be clearer and brighter, and the bass will have that bone deep thump everyone loves. Adding at least one amplified subwoofer will make a huge difference as well. You just can’t get the same bass out of a 7″ woofer as you can out of a 12″ subwoofer.

Amplifiers are the driving force behind your car stereo system. Skimping in this area is extremely dangerous, not only to your sound quality, but to your speakers as well. An underpowered or cheaply made amplifier is prone to what is known as clipping. Without getting too technical, what this does is send a large amount of direct current through your speaker, causing the speaker coil to overheat and melt. This leads to the infamous “blown speaker”. Coil overheating is the single biggest cause of speaker failure. Putting too large of an amplifier on a speaker can cause the same thing to happen. Always match up your speakers’ power handling ratings to the output of your amplifier. For instance, let’s say you have a 4 channel amplifier that provides 1000 watts total power. That is 250 watts per channel (1000/4), so your speakers should be capable of handling that much power, or you risk blowing them out.

Having a killer car stereo system is something your can be proud of, and dramatically increases your cars coolness factor and resale value, no matter what vehicle it is installed in.

The Best Audio System for Your Car

When looking for a car stereo to fit into the car, a number of items or aspects are considered. The first of these is the purpose of the stereo or auditory system, what the system will at most of the time be used to do. The next one is the age of the person who will be using the stereo and the final one is the type of vehicle that is being installed with the system. However, of most importance and the main thing to be considered are the budget and the specifications of the individual that is looking to have the audio system installed in the vehicle. There are a couple of ways in which one can prefer to install sound in his or her vehicle to suit his or her specifications. The first way is the option of installing a basic system that has tweeters and two mid range speakers. It is common knowledge that a simplified well installed small sound system can be clearer and heard with ease and clarity. This system is suitable for those that prefer their car stereo to be used for the purpose of such outputs as news and talk shows.

The next type of stereo system or audio system is the competition level of system application whereby one can buy a good CD player and also include an equalizer and a booster. There could be the inclusion of tweeters and mid range speakers the same as the basic type only that this time there is the inclusion of added speakers on the rear to boost the sound of the mid range speakers at the front of the vehicle. Equalizers and the booster are essential especially when one wants to fine tune the system’s response. Extra batteries may be needed when a person intends to play the music or system for a long time because the equalizer needs power to run the music system.

The last and final system is the SPL system. With this system, the main idea is to be loud especially when in low frequencies. In order for this type of system to be efficient, it needs many speakers, much power to run the system and a compressed space so that the sound can be focused and therefore becoming loud. Obviously this comes out as the most expensive of the three music systems. Of importance here first is the upgrade of the car’s electrical system. This therefore means the upgrade of batteries, transistors and capacitors. The most essential of the equipments is the subwoofers. The other systems can also be fitted with surround systems but the one that stands out is this SPL system. In order to move much air, the subwoofers need to comprise of a high excursion (Xmax) and also have a large cone area. With subwoofers, one gives the meaning of bass a whole new meaning. So whatever the specifications one needs, the type of system to use is left up to the car owner.

Which Type Of Audio System Is Best For Your Car?

If you really love your music and want to take it on the road with you, chances are a stock stereo system that comes preloaded from your automobile manufacturer just will not do. Finding the right replacement can be a bit of a challenge, however. There are tons of systems out there, but it is not likely that every option will suit your needs or budget.

Creating any type of replacement audio system for a vehicle will require several main components. These are worth considering no matter what level of sound quality is desired:

Speakers – There are a variety of different speaker types that are designed to work together to produce sounds that are crisp, clean and full of power. A good system will include woofers, which produce the low frequency sounds; subwoofers, which deal with the lowest frequencies and add to bass; tweeters, which are meant to produce high frequencies. Power – If you are taking the time to replace a stock audio system, it does not make sense to go without a power booster. To achieve this, you will need an amplifier. These increase power and help provide a cleaner sound. An amplifier, however, is not required to produce a basic replacement system. Components – A standard system will include a head unit, or receiver. Beyond this, you will probably want a CD player. Other components to consider include equalizers, MP3 players and similar auxiliary devices.

To pick the best sound system to meet your needs, you will want to decide just how much of an investment you want to make. Systems tend to run in several classes, including:

Entry level – This is a basic replacement system that will not break the bank, but should provide a step up from a stock stereo. Basic systems should include speakers, a decent head unit, a CD player, possibly an amplifier and subwoofers to improve the sound. Mid-level – While this is the “middle of the road” system, it will sound like a dream. To take sound quality up to the next level, you will need all the components of a basic system with a few extras added in. To improve the quality of sound offered by a basic system, make sure to consider equalizers to fine tune the system. In some cases, multiple equalizers are required to really get the quality desired. If the system is being designed to play when the car is not running, a battery backup is a good idea to make sure the vehicle’s electrical system is not overtaxed. High end – High end systems, or SPLs, are designed to let owners get as loud as they want to even in the low frequencies. This type of system will require more than the average number of speakers, a lot of power and more money than the other two. To properly support a high-end system, the vehicle’s electrical system will need to be upgraded with alternators, capacitors and batteries. Select basic components, such as the head unit, with an ear toward sound quality.

Most manufacturer placed audio systems are designed to get the job done, but in a “good enough” sort of way. When better sound quality is desired, replacing stock with custom can pay off with cleaner, richer and louder sounds.
